The machine, believed to be the ancestor of the modern helicopter, appears in a drawing dating to around 1480 included in the Codex Atlanticus. Leonardo outlines a plan for an "air screw," imagining it as a snail about 5 meters in diameter; in his intentions, it should "bolt" through the air, taking advantage of its density. Moved by the muscle power of four men walking on a central platform, it consisted of a wooden structure covered with starched linen cloth. Since there is no proof that Leonardo actually built the machine he envisioned, it remains one of his many visions.
